Today was the last day that we attended classes at Institut
Josep Vallerdú. I woke up at six, as I had been doing for the rest of the week,
and Neus and I left with her mom to catch the bus from Fulleda, her town, to
Les Borges Blanques, the town where the school was located, at 7. As usual, the
bus ride took about forty minutes and we arrived at school with time to spare
before classes started at eight. That morning, I went to English, gym, and
computer classes. I especially enjoyed the computer class, because the students
are all working together in three teams to design an app to help girls in India
have better access to education at home, as many girls in India stop attending
school once they reach the age of 14. I think it’s really cool that the
students are doing this sort of project, because it teaches them many necessary
skills about using computers but it is also making a meaningful product that
will help others in the future. After these three classes, we went to a little
reception held by the English and Spanish teachers at the school to say goodbye
to us after our final class at the school. After the reception, we left the
school to walk over to the town olive oil festival, which is a much bigger deal
than it sounds. It was held inside what seemed like a conference center, and
was quite a large operation. There were rows and rows of stalls of olive oil,
cheeses, meats, pastries, cakes, wines, and nearly all of them were offering
free samples. Tyson and I met a man selling cheese who was quite the character,
and after seeing him two more times later that day, I ended up with his phone
number, so I hope to keep in contact with my new friend. After trying more than enough of just about
everything, we left the festival to go on a little tour of the town with a
guide we met up with outside of the building where the festival was held. He
showed us many highlights of the town, and after we had finished our
sightseeing, we headed over to a large party tent that had been set up for a
community lunch. Once we arrived there, we met up again with our Spanish host
students that we had left at school and we all had lunch together. After lunch,
we said goodbye to our teachers and walked around with our hosts for a while,
and later Neus and I went back to the festival with her parents as they had not
yet visited it. Eventually, we left the festival and headed back to Fulleda for
a while before leaving once again to meet up with some other American and
Spanish students for dinner in Juneda, a town right next to Les Borges. Dinner
was really fun, and afterwards we walked over to a bar in town to hang out with
some other Spanish kids and play foosball and billiards. The Spanish kids were
a lot better than the Americans at
both games. We stayed there for a couple of hours, before finally heading home
in the small hours of the morning and quickly going to bed.
americanos. Eventualmente, Neus y yo regresamos a casa y nos dormimos.
